My, my, my – what is the world of technology coming to? Just when you thought it was enough to be able to download video and music to your mobile phone, it seems the boundaries have been pushed that one inch further.

News just of Japan is that the latest in mobile technology is set to be the fragrant phone, where you can download and release the scent of your choice, all through your mobile phone. That’s right, NTT Communications Corp are trialling an aroma therapy phone service in Japan, and no, the article which mentioned these trials wasn’t published on April 1st!

How’s that for an unbeatable mobile phone offer? Apparently, the trials involve twenty participants with aroma pots in their rooms. The aroma pots are equipped with infrared sensors and sixteen different fragrances. These essential oils range from chamomile to peppermint and the oils are blended according the participant’s choice of music or video download from NTT’s DoCoMo Inc's i-mode Internet service. So in theory, whatever your mood, this scent pot has an aroma to match.

This mobile phone deal apparently can trigger up to 200 appropriate scents, which in turn aim to aid concentration or induce sound sleep. That’s more than I ever imagined for the possibility of all that the humble mobile phone offers! If the trial is successful, NTT is considering launching the product commercially.

There are also another set of trials envisaged in the near future, once again by NTT Communications Corp and also incorporating fragrances and mobile phones. The next service could allow users to send files with scent attachments. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
