First Impressions: The Nokia E61i

First Impressions: The Nokia E61i
Over lunch, I finally got to use a friend's Nokia E61i. The Nokia E61's descendant is thinner, features an easier-to-use five-way navigator (no more making mistakes with a fudgy joystick), and has a built-in camera. The E61i also facilitates VoIP over its Wi-Fi connection, something the E61 doesn't do out of the box. They rounder QWERTY keys are also easier to press.

Aside from that however, nothing's changed. But then again, you can't go wrong with the big display, loud external speaker, high-capacity battery, and the QWERTY thumbboard. The Nokia E61i truly addresses the limitations of its forerunner, integrating a camera and better menu navigation controls, while retaining many of its advantages, like the superb S60 3rd Ed Symbian OS.

Yet from my first impressions, the Nokia E61i isn't revolutionary enough for most E61 owners to sell their units and make the switch.

BancorpSouth and ATT Mobile Launch Mobile Banking

BancorpSouth and ATT Mobile Launch Mobile Banking
BancorpSouth, a chain of banks located in the southeastern US, now has a mobile banking service that allow AT&T Wireless customers with certain phones (the Motorola V3 Razr, V551, V557, L7 SLVR, or LG CU500) to check balances, transfer funds and pay bills through their phones, all through an SSL connection. A quote on ArkansasBusiness from the CEO makes BancorpSouth sound a bit like Internet mavericks from the first days of online banking in the 1990s, so it's probably not surprising they're one of the first banks in the US to go with this service. However, given the service and phone limitations, I wonder how many people are going to be able to sign up?

Introducing the Nokia 6120 Classic

Introducing the Nokia 6120 Classic
Check out Krisse's unboxing of the Nokia 6120 Classic. It's a bit hilarious, since the unboxing proper ends before it begins. There's simply so little to unbox.

That's because the 6120 Classic is a very unassuming smartphone, lacking the fancy bundled peripherals and packaging of its ore expensive peers. Perhaps the only superficially exciting things about this gadget is the glossy finish. Yet surprisingly enough, this is one loaded smartphone:
  • Quadband GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 Mhz), WCDMA and HSDPA Smartphone
  • Runs on Series 60 3rd Edition
  • 2" QVGA TFT color display
  • 35MB available user memory, microSD slot
  • Bluetooth 2.0 (A2DP-capable)and USB connectivity
  • Integrated 2.0 megapixel camera, QVGA-resolution secondary camera
  • Media player and document viewer
Maybe the Nokia 6120 Classic will become the new champion of the cheapest 3G phone contest?

Did you get an iPhone?

Did you get an iPhone?
Did you get an iPhone? If you're like many who did get one, you waited in line, and then had problems activating your iPhone. TDavid uncovered that over 65% of Apple stores still have iPhones in stock. So what do you make of all this madness? Did you get an iPhone? Do you love it? Hate it? Check out what Mike Rohde has to say about the iPhone: The iPhone is not perfect, but it is re-shaping the entire wireless phone world, even if it's pushing competitors to respond to it. Great point Mike!

What do YOU think?

iPhone.

iPhone.
"We have been testing the iPhone for two weeks, in multiple usage scenarios, in cities across the country," write Walter S Mossberg and Katherine Boehret. "Our verdict is that, despite some flaws and feature omissions, the iPhone is, on balance, a beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer."

David Pogue reviews the iPhone, too, and finds it "amazing," but of course, "not perfect." Also in the New York Times, Katie Hafner talks with Apple watchers like Jeremy Horwitz, the editor in chief of iLounge: "Ask yourself how many companies can announce a product six months in advance and not just sustain public interest but even build the frenzy. It's staggering to me."

So what's it to cinephiles? For New City Chicago, Ray Pride has a few thoughts: "While much ink's been spent on the changes that no one can predict in the weeks and months to come in the movie industry, less has been written about how exhibition - from the multiplex to the rare, preserved movie palace - can survive and subsist in a world of broadband Internet and handheld devices with wireless connections and downloads, legal and not. Is it worth building bricks and mortar anymore?"

Motorolas Motorazr V3i

Motorolas Motorazr V3i
This advertisement meant for promoting Motorolas Motorazr V3i mobile phone designed by Dolce & Gabbana. The print advertisement appeared in the leading newspapers of Britain and landed in controversy for being offensive. The advertisement was showing the two male designers, one standing in front of the other. The man standing to the rear was holding the phone at an angle so that it can draw similarity with a barber’s razor, at the same time the other man had a cut on his cheek. The punch line of the advertisement read, The Cutting Edge of Technology.

The complainants alleged that the advertisement was offensive and irresponsible, since it seemed to justify knife-related violence, and particularly to glamorize sexual violence. On the other hand, Motorola contended that they had created a graphic symbol between a barber’s razor and the RAZR phone to emphasize the razor thinness of the phone and its cutting edge technology.

The Advertising Standards Authority had not upheld that complaints and ruled that the image was highly stylized, the advertisement was not likely to cause serious or pervasive offence to most readers. It also ruled that the ad was unlikely to glamorize sexual violence.
