Free Your iPhone
A few efforts have been publicized by developers and hackers that open the iPhone, including iPhoneSimFree and 17 year old George Hotz. The methods allow iPhones to send and receive phone calls over not just AT&T, which has an exclusive deal to sell and service iPhones, but other phone network as well.
The efforts have broken the traditional stranglehold the mobile phone industry has on mobile devices. Opening the iPhone to other networks lets customers use the cell phone provider they already have and can avoid coverage and high pricing from incumbent networks.

Freeing a RAZR V3m from Verizon's Clutches
It's a dying practice, but I don't know why some service providers love limiting what their customers can do with a product or service they've paid money for. I can understand it's all for protecting the bottom line.
But these schemes are ultimately futile. Especially when discovering methods to break through such restrictions are a contact sport for geeks and coders everywhere, and that they gleefully share their breakthroughs online.
Case in point: a Verizon RAZR V3m. You can check out this article on WikiHow, which details steps you can take to free things up. Free to transfer files between the smartphone and Windows XP, via USB cable and Bluetooth.
And I can imagine any enterprising user can adapt the directions to work on similar models. Thanks to Sasha for the heads-up.

Nokia ESeries Hello Kitty Phones Alas! Only a Design
So what do we get when we gift free Photoshop trials to crazy fans? You guessed it alright, weird concepts. Nokia ESeries Hellow Kiity phone is one such design. Weird, but right down my alley.
Will it not be fun to watch the chic cat go cellular? Yes. But ESeies, for heavens sake, no.
That was my editor. I think pink is the color for ESeries. Girls imagination will already be flying with thoughts of the coolness this pink phone would radiate. Hold that thought because as for now the cell phones come only as mock up gadgets.
Wonder what Nokia thinks of all this? Fingers crossed and hoping that the Finnish giant takes a liking for this weird design.

Have You Ever Considered Smartphone or PDA Insurance?
A smartphone or PDA, especially the high-end ones, represents a significant investment. So losing one to theft, loss, or accidental damage can be quite a painful experience. Most retailers already provide you with warranties, which is a basic form of protection. It's great to have a gadget suffering from accidental damage fixed for free, but what happens when you lose your device through a thief's cunning or your own carelessness?
Here's where a smartphone or PDA insurance comes in. They entitle you to a payout if you happen to lose your gadget for any reason other than intentional damage. Granted, just like any other insurance package, insuring a gadget requires a monthly or even daily cost. But Solware has a good argument:
The free/cheaper handset you receive when you sign a twelve month contract with your service provider can cost up to £1000 to replace if you lose or damage it. This is because the network (T-Mobile, Vodaphone etc) discounted your PDA because you are promising them 12 months of your business.
With the 2U PDA Insurance policy you have peace of mind knowing that, should you have a problem, these costs will be covered by us.
You should consider insuring your smartphone or PDA is because it helps you deal with the randomness of bad luck. And if you're thinking that even the best kind of insurance won't help you recover your precious lost data, then you probably don't back it up on a regular basis. Which you should.

BlackBerry 8800 Smartphone
MobileBurn reviews the MobileBurn and writes: “With the exception of a somewhat stiff space bar, the 8800 has a pretty nice full QWERTY keyboard. Upon initially seeing that the period (full stop) key required an ALT shift to access, I was surprised. But RIM thought through this more than I had initially given it credit for: entering two spaces in a row will automatically covert the first space to a period, making the period key needed only for email addresses and the occasional number. That’s a real time saver. Capital letters can be entered using the traditional shift keys, but are more conveniently entered by long pressing the key.”
