On the prowl: Meet Ming
In a few more months, my contract with AT&T (formerly Cingular whence we first met) ends, and so I'm out on the prowl for a new deal and a new phone (can AT&T still do it for me?). Honestly, I know that there is a super batch of new phones arriving to shelves in the next few weeks, but currently I just can't rationalize spending $250-$350 for a smartphone, when another $50 will get me the iPhone. But, I'm sworn to staying iPhone-free until its next generation model makes it to market. So, let's talk about the Motorola Ming, also known as the "unlocked phone that can do it all."
I like Ming because it runs a Linux-based interface (mmmm open source). The interface helps any user easily navigate between entertainment, contacts, documents, and more. Ming has a 2-megapixel camera for photos, a business card reader to store your contacts, and 8MB of internal memory.

Free Your iPhone
A few efforts have been publicized by developers and hackers that open the iPhone, including iPhoneSimFree and 17 year old George Hotz. The methods allow iPhones to send and receive phone calls over not just AT&T, which has an exclusive deal to sell and service iPhones, but other phone network as well.
The efforts have broken the traditional stranglehold the mobile phone industry has on mobile devices. Opening the iPhone to other networks lets customers use the cell phone provider they already have and can avoid coverage and high pricing from incumbent networks.

Beyonce's Samsung Phone is a Piece of Trash
I hate seeing celebrities, or anyone for that matter, pimping out their shit so they can make more money without giving back. That's one of the reasons why I can't stand 50 cent. The a-hole made $400 million last year with Vitamin Water sales but his only contribution to the African American community is promoting pimping and violence.
Anyway, Beyonce made some ridiculous statement about some dumbass song the idiots who buy this trash can listen to."When I was 10, I recorded a song called '632-5792' -- a phone number. It's a little embarrassing but it's cute. There's a recording of that song on the phone exclusively for my fans. I wanted to make sure people got a feel for who I really am. It's only through this phone that you can get this close to my life."billboard

Unlocked iPhones Bricked by new Updates?

Introducing the Nokia E51
Once again the sniffers have deduced a lot from snippets of data. Maybe manufacturers aren't afraid to spill the beans online after all. Thanks to this XML file,
All About Symbian are speculating that the new Nokia E51 will feature a generous connectivity suite ("GSM, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA and WiFi"), a QVGA display and a traditional smartphone keypad. This mobile will definitely run on S60 3rd edition, and apparently also has Feature Pack 1, the same suite that allows the All About Symbian.
Hmmm.... a business phone for customers who don't want their pocket to bulge? If the picture above is accurate, then the Nokia E51 looks like it's suffering from smartphone anorexia. Which is always a good thing.
