More ConnectMe Mobile features

More ConnectMe Mobile features

Gallucci uses the Followme feature to reroute important calls to his or another partner's cell phone after hours and uses Audiomail to send recorded instructions when handling multiple cases in different locations.

The Document Manager lets him review and even make alterations to documents while out of the office and on the go.

But a conference call recently with ConnectMe Mobile reps left me drooling, I must confess, at the thought of how this technology could impact the bootstrap entrepreneur, the subject of this blog.

Breaking Through The Voice Mail Barrier

Breaking Through The Voice Mail Barrier
It is often difficult to speak with busy people.

Leaving numerous messages on voice mail has limitations, and I think we have become overly dependent on voice mail.

Call Screening Sucks - But Make The Receptionist Your Friend

Most receptionists are 'gate keepers', whose job it is to answer the telephone and in some businesses screen calls.

Screening calls is an attempt by management to improve efficiency, and allow staff time to get their 'work done'. However, depending on the training and instructions provided to the 'gate keeper' this can have a negative impact on customers, suppliers, friends and family.

The solution is to ask the 'gate keeper' to help you. If you ask, they will often tell you the best strategy for getting in to see someone.

So What Else Can We Do?

E-mail: think about it. When someone sits down to view e-mail, they are ready to receive messages. When they read your e-mail, you have their undivided attention! Not quite as good as speaking with them on the telephone or in person; however, it can be an effective communication tool.

The Facsimile: if the information is not confidential, I suggest sending a fax. Faxes have an urgency to them, and they will find their way to the hands of the recipient.

The PDA: increasingly, people are carrying an e-mail equipped Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). I carry one, and it is the best way to get in touch with me. If someone asked for the e-mail address, I would give it to them.

Voice Mail: this can be a powerful tool if used appropriately. Pay attention to your voice and leave a message with instructions. Make the message friendly, informative and put some personality into it. However, it is inappropriate to leave a voice mail when cold calling, have bad news or you need a detailed explanation.

You can use these tools to:
  • continue a dialog;
  • set up and confirm appointments;
  • clarify buying intention
  • confirm details; and,
  • communicate with hard to reach, busy and successful people.
Look For Opportunities

Customize your approach for each person. Be creative! Be sure your message contains enough detail to make it worth the reader's time. Put some thought into your message and edit it to ensure communication is clear and concise. Use a spell checker too. :o)

First aid kit for mobile phones

First aid kit for mobile phones

I have first aid kits everywhere -- in my purse, in my car, in my suitcase. What's missing is emergency health information. Now, I can get that on my cell phone thanks to a partnership between the Mayo Clinic and Digital Cyclone (a subsidiary of Garmin), which developed Mayo Clinic in Touch, an application for your cell phone that delivers health alerts, first aid tips, a symptom checker, and -- most importantly for me -- the location of the nearest emergency room via GPS. The service costs $2.99 per month, which I think is a small price to pay to make me a less paranoid traveler. It's available on Verizon and Sprint phones, and scheduled to be released soon for Cingular and Alltel phones.

Plenty of information for recreational hypochondriacs too. Take a look at the YouTube demo video after the jump.

AA-powered emergency cell phone charger

AA-powered emergency cell phone charger

Okay, so it looks like a pepper spray gone (or trying to be) funkadelic, but you''ll be thankful for this little baby when it jumpstarts your cell phone on one of those road-warrior days when you''re not near a power outlet long enough to recharge it properly. The functionally-named Emergency Phone Charger just needs one AA battery and it can boost a phone to run for up to an additional two hours. And since it''s only a bit larger than the AA battery it contains, it''s small enough to be popped into a handbag without adding much weight or bulk.

The Emergency Phone comes with 4 adaptors so it can work with just about any cell phone. The only downside I can see for now is that it''s available in only one colour --- the shriekingly obvious turquoise pictured here. But hey, at least that''ll make it easy to spot when you need to grab it from your bag.

Available for £5.95 on pre-order from i want one of those.

Strap a pill box to your cellphone

Strap a pill box to your cellphone

Let me be honest. When I read that the Japanese consider dressing up a cell phone almost as important as having one, I was amused. The cell phone has come a long way, indeed. From being a mere communication device to a camera to a personal organizer, and now to being a barbie doll, waiting to be decked out. It;s no wonder that cell phone straps are big in Japan, and it's all about having fun with your favourite characters and symbols strapped to your cell. There are also some really incredibly ridiculous ones like this one, with a UFO detector built in.

I must admit though that there are some useful straps going around and this Pill Box strap sounds like a good idea to me. Most of us rarely step out of the house without our cell phone, and having this strap will ensure that you don't miss out on your daily medication wherever you are. Using the alarm feature on your mobile, you can be sure that you never fail to take your pills on time. On the aesthetics front, the pill box as such looks pretty nice, and with its metallic finish, appears to be durable.

Available only in Japan; if you want one, you may have to ring up one of your Japanese friends to get them from here at $6.50.

Turn your cell phone into an anklet

Turn your cell phone into an anklet

Belt clips have always been popular accessories for cell phones, but what if you don''t wear a belt? What are you supposed to do then?

Wrap it around your ankle, of course! Assuming you don''t have 1) pockets, 2) a purse, 3) any fashion sense, or 4) a shred of self-consciousness, consider HTL-Wireless'' patent-pending CPC Strap. Featuring five Jewelry Strap Loop Attachments to "unleash your inner creativity," the adjustable strap fits anything with a 5- to 20-inch circumference and is available in two styles: universal (for clamshell and candybar phones) and Razr (for Motorola RAZR phones).

HTL-Wireless thinks pairing a Bluetooth headset with an ankle-strapped cell phone shows the world that you''re a "trendsetter [who doesn''t] mind being the center of attention." If you agree, then click over to the order page. But be quick about it. Only the first 1,000 CPC Straps are priced at $20; after that, they''re $50 each. And I thought you couldn''t put a price on fashion. Silly me.

Crocheted cuties for iPods and cell phones

Crocheted cuties for iPods and cell phones

Cute! These crocheted cuties can be used for your iPod or iPod video. Made of yarn, buttons, and "googly eyes" (for the frog) you can dress up or down, but either way your iPod will look fabulous. The website that sells these cuties currently only offers one size, but indicates that there is a "mini" version available that will fit iPod minis and mobile phones. As if these crocheted cuties could get even cuter!

Mobile phone on your fingers

Mobile phone on your fingers

Why would anyone want to use their hands for chatting, literally? If you're wondering what this question refers to, just take a look at this latest mobile phone design, one of the winners at this year’s iF Concept Product Awards, and it might amuse you as much as it did me.

This concept product, called the ‘Finger Touching’ mobile, is apparently a wearable mobile device for enhanced chatting. Which means, you slip the device on to your hand and it projects a 3x4 cellphone keypad on to your palm as seen in the picture above. The buttons are placed on the finger joints, so all I can imagine is rap-tapping my fingers whenever I want to type out a text message. The keypad concept seems pretty inconvenient and does not consider the significant learning curve involved for users to shift to tapping messages on their palms for lack of the conventional keypad. Though the device itself looks sleek, several important questions remain unanswered. And if you're wondering, like I am, why the concept device has the Samsung brand name on it, all we can do is wait and watch until (or if) the concept does find its way into an actual product. In the meantime, I definitely have more useful tasks for my palm.
